Denise – "Retro Mix Volume One: Deeper"

Deeper

Mixed by DJ Denise

Recorded January 2002

The idea of the Retro Mixes was that they would feature older tracks that never quite made it to the recording booth. There are always so many records that get passed by when a compilation is made that shouldn’t! The Retro Mix series would be dedicated to recording these tracks that kick ass but are no longer new releases.

As it turned out, there never was a Retro Mix Volume Two, as mix tapes went out of style faster than MC Hammer’s pants. At the time this project was made, Deeper was described as “a break from the norm, featuring mellower, groovier and funkier hard house tracks recorded at a slower BPM.” It turns out that this mix tape was a perfect bridge between Denise’s hard house sound and funky house sound.

The question remains, however: Can there ever be a Volume 2? The idea hasn’t been totally discarded, but if there should ever be a Retro Mix Volume Two, it will be a free downloadable mp3 mix for your reminiscing pleasure.

Remember that song with that guy talking about “They Know What Is What, But They Don’t Know What Is What… They Just Strut… What The Fuck…?” Well it’s called Star69 and it’s the last song on this compilation.

Denise aka DJ D – "The Orange Species"

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Orange Species

Mixed by Denise aka DJ D

Recorded June 2001

The Orange Species was made during a time when there was no stopping hard house… even to this day it contains some of the highest quality hard house tracks ever made. Side A starts off dark & hypnotic then moves into some serious ass-shaking beats! Side B starts off with a couple bass-heavy tracks tinted with bad ass mofo vocals and works into some serious quality choonage. Take note of the mix from Track 5 into 6 – it is still one of Denise’s favorite mixes. An “Outa Space” remix is tagged on the end for sentimental value, as it is definitely an anthem of the time. You’ll find The Orange Species enjoyable from start to finish… and start to finish… and start to finish… and start to finish…

The Orange Species also marks the transition period between Denise changing her DJ name from ‘DJ D’ to ‘Denise.’ The temporary moniker ‘Denise aka DJ D’ would last on flyers for about a year until it finally made it’s full switch to simply ‘Denise.’

DJ D – "Style"

Style

Mixed by DJ D

Recorded January 2000

Style is Denise’s first solo release, made about half a year after the versus tape Kickin’ Arse with Thomas Trouble. You can see the progression made since Kickin’ Arse in regards to both track selection and mixing style. There are much longer & smoother mixes on Style, as well as a few tricks thrown in for good measure. In addition, Denise’s affinity for harder, less trancier and more housey music was in it’s infancy with this compilation. In 2000 when this mix was recorded, Denise didn’t even know about these genres called “NRG” and “UK hard house.” It was all simply “hard trance” at the time.

Thomas Trouble vs. DJ D – "Kickin’ Arse"

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Kickin' Arse

Mixed by Thomas Trouble and DJ D

Recorded Summer 1999

Kickin’ Arse was Denise’s first public release, created after less than a year of DJing. San Francisco veteran Thomas Trouble was kind enough make a versus tape so that Denise’s name could get advertised under the wings of Thomas.

Using advice given to her by Thomas, most of her mixes on Kickin’ Arse are smooth and gradual transitions using only the cross fader. You’ll find that while the mixes are beat-matched, there isn’t too much creativity to them. It being early in her career, Denise still had a lot to learn about many aspects of mixing – EQing, when to use volume faders versus when to use the cross fader, tricks, cuts, overall creativity and originality, etc.

The track selection for this tape represents Denise’s style at the very beginning of her career. Some of you may recognize these tunes from the original Man in the Moon days at Big Heart City… ah the memories!
